Yarn and Notions: Any worsted weight yarn that is soft and cozy enough to put on your pup, and some cute buttons (I used 6).
Needles: Size 8 straight or circ (sweater is not knit in the round, but it may be easier to hold all the work on circ needles compared to long straight needles)
Pattern: Cast on 60 stitches and knit all rows for 4". Next row, knit 20, bind off 10, knit 30. Next row, knit 30, cast on 10 more stitches, knit 20. This creates the arm hole! Knit all rows for another 4". Do the k20, bo10, k30 again and then k30, co10, k20 to create another arm hole. Knit another 8-9" and then to create button holes, depending on how many you want, yarn over then k2tog to create a button hole. I did 6 evenly spaced. (Only 5 can be seen in the picture, but there really is one at the very bottom being hidden.) Afterwards, knit another couple rows and then bind off. You can choose to knit the buttons into your work as you go in the beginning (about half an inch from the cast on edge), but you need to use shank buttons and have a very small (size A or B) crochet hook to do so. For this sweater, I just sewed the buttons on the end (right at the cast on edge).
Size: This sweater fit my 8 month old chihuahua mix and she was probably 10 pounds and 12-13" from collar/shoulders to the base of her tail. Since this sweater is really just a rectangle with arm holes, it's very easy to tailor this sweater to your own dog. All you need to do is measure your dog's length from the collar/shoulders to the base of the tail. Then using your gauge, probably 4-5 stitches per inch, cast on as many stitches needed to reach that length. Also, measure the length of the front of the dog's "chest" from where the collar is (where the tags usually hang) to the front of their arms. This is the number you knit before you start to bind off for the arm hole. Also, depending on how big your dog's legs are, you might need to make a bigger or smaller arm hole, so you'll bind off and cast on a different amount for the arm hole. Also, if the space between your dogs' arms is bigger or smaller than the 4" given in the pattern, alter it to fit your dog!

I am thrilled to find this pattern. My new little Min Pin about froze on a recent trip up north. Your little "model" doggie looks an awful lot like my little dog!
I'm glad you found my pattern too! I hope it's keeping your pup warm! My dog does have very min pin-like coloring, but she also has white at her toes which is more of a chihuahua coloring than a min pin. It's sad, I learned to knit so I could make custom outfits for my dog, but she doesn't like them! It kind of crushed my heart the first time she ran and hid when I tried to put a sweater on her =( I still make them, but not as often. She usually wears it for the picture and then maybe once or twice more ever again. Maybe some day she'll change her mind and end up loving them, but I'm not holding my breath.
I'm going to try this pattern RIGHT now. My chihuahua LOVES sweaters. I'll let you know how it turns out. I am also going to try your other pattern with the nursing buttons. Thank you for publishing them!!!!
Hi! I made this sweater for my puggle Iggy. Here's a link to the pic!!!!!

Cute and easy pattern! thank you!
Caroline!
I made your sweet dog sweater and wanted to share a picture with you...how do I post it to you? You can reply to me at jessica.s.pope@gmail.com. I have a little min pin and she loves the new duds. :) Thanks for the pattern, you are really talented! I had been making really complicated sweaters that don't look nearly as beautiful or fit as well...Please write back soon!
Jessica
Thanks for the comments everyone! I'm so glad you like the pattern!
rennagale - did you knit up the sweater for your min pin? If you did, I'd love to see a picture!
annie black - did you make the sweater yet? How'd it turn out? If you do the nursing bottons one too, let me know. I KNOW those directions are a little screwy (I wrote up the pattern in a half sleep state a looong time after I originally knit it up), so let me know if you get confused and I'll try to explain it better.
coley - I commented on your flickr account! The sweater is just darling! How old is your puggle? Our Maverick is going to be 2 on the 27th! Puggles are such a hoot I tell you - super active with their strange howl/bark one minute, and then passed out on the sofa the next! Haha!
jessica.pope - I just e-mailed you to see if you could send me a picture! I tried to look around your blog to see if you posted it there, but I couldn't see it. I hope to see a picture soon! I'm glad your pup likes it!
Caroline: You created an awesome pattern for the Man's best friend. I made one for my beals and one for my Lhasa Apso as well as my sisters 2 pugs. They all look so cute. As yes as a Mom I can say that your mom would be very very proud of you. Thanks for sharing your talent.
Caroline: What an awesome pattern you created. You are very talented. I used your pattern to knit my beagle and Lhasa Apso this fabulous sweater. I then knitted 2 more for my sisters 2 pugs. And Yes. speaking as a mom, your mom would be very very proud of you. My best to you and thanks for sharing your talent.
Sue Beals: YOU MADE MY WEEK! I'm so glad you enjoyed the pattern and have made many pups warm! If you don't mind me asking, how'd you find my pattern? Do you have any pictures of the dogs in their sweaters? If you ever get a picture, I'd love to see it!
I just ran across your pattern. I am going to give this a try for my dachshund, Ori. He's about 10-11 pounds. (he's considered a mini)I think this will look cute on him. I will let you know how thijs turns out.
Hi Dee! I'm so glad you found my site and want to re-create one of my patterns for your dog! I can't wait to see how it turns out!
I'm so happy to finally find a pattern easy enough for the beginner I am (only 3 classes so far!). Since I've never used circular needles, I apologize for the stupid questions. Can you tell me what size needle and cable I should buy for this? My mom's dog Sabrina, the oh-so-lucky beneficiary of my first knitting project, is 14-15" from collar to base of tail. Thanks for your help!
Hi Sadie! I thought I had left a comment the other day for you, but I just checked and I guess it's not there! For this sweater, it's not knit in the round, so the longer (I think they're 12 or 13 inches long) straight needles, or 24" circular needles will work. You don't knit in the round, so you don't really need circular needles. There are also no cables, so you don't need a cable needle! This is really as simple as it gets!
Let me know if you have any questions, and if you can send pictures of the final sweater!
hello how are you? i love this pattern and the other one with the nursing buttons!!!! i cant wait to try them both! but for this pattern i do have a question if you dont mind ansering it, when you say cast off x amount of stitches do you mean decreasing?
hi how are you i love your pattern its is so cute!! but i do have a question when you said bind off on stitches do you mean decreasing? thank you!! :)

Hi Kristin! Bind off is the same as cast off - just like you would do when you finish a project. It's a little weird to do in the middle of a project, but that's what creates the arm holes. It's not decreasing, because you actually need to create a hole, not just decrease the number of stitches.
I just knitted this for my Bichon Ziggy and it looks great on him! I can't wait to post some pictures. The neck part is pretty loose on him, but it kind-of looks stylish, lol.
sourgrapes - I'm so glad you liked the sweater pattern! I can't wait to see pictures of Ziggy sporting it =)
so cute! I have tried the garter stitch doggie sweater in Stoller's book but this one looks so adorable, I'm casting on today. :) Thanks!
Love this pattern! I'm a beginner and I'm confused at the point where you are suppose to cast on 10. How do I do this in the middle of the row??
Hi Kristina! You might want to Google or look on YouTube for a "knitted cast on". You knit into the last stitch just like a regular knit stitch and then you put the new stitch you create onto the left hand needle to add more stitches. That's how I cast on in the middle of a row when I have no tail.
This sweater is simply adorable! I'm going to knit this right now! I love how the pattern is all knit, making it very simple. Thank you for posting this.

Thanks so much for the great pattern! I love how simple it is and how easily it can be modified to fit your own dog! I just finished knitting one for my Cavalier, and he LOVES it :D (so do i!) I made the body too long originally, so i folded over the collar and buttoned it down, and it looks adorable :)
thanks again-
angela
I would love to make this pattern for my 9 lb. toy fox terrier. Question though: He is rather "well endowed." I have to make the underside considerably shorter than the top so that he won't have an accident on it. I guess I just short row the rear section? Thanks.
This is a cute little pattern. I need to figure out how to downsize it DRASTICALLY for my 8 week old Yorkie pup. I think she would benefit from it! :)
I would like to thank you for this pattern it was easy to follow which for someone who hasn't knitted in 16 years was a good thing. It is the only sweater my Peanut will wear without a fuss. Again thankyou very much. I made it red & white which looks very good on him since he is black.
Anon - I'm so happy you like the pattern. I'm even happier that Peanut loves it! =)
I'm having trouble with the knitted cast on. I end up with my yarn at the end of the 10 cast on sts. So instead of having 20 sts left, I have 30. Plus I have the yarn from the begining of the chain of 10 going across the leg hole now onto a stitch on my right needle. Help?
Personally, I never got a response to my question back in January about my male dog. I had to completely rebuild the pattern and then felt it to make it truly functional. Therefore, to the person asking about the knitted cast-on...once you get it, it's very easy. Look for a good visual/verbal description in a book or go to a local knitting store. They will show you.
Ann - I'm so sorry for not getting back to you! I very rarely check this blog any more and thought I had set up in my preferences to be e-mailed when people post comments, but I guess I didn't. I finally just set it up correctly the other day and just saw both of these posts.
Lexi - I agree with Ann, try to find a video/visual of how to do the knitted cast on. It is easy once you see it. Try searching on YouTube. It's hard to explain in writing, it's a lot quicker if you can find a video.
Thank you, Caroline. My cutie's knitted sweater is great, but I also created a pattern for buttoned fleece coats (sometimes with fur trim) with a blanket-stitch edge. They really are cute on my toy fox terrier and fast to make. He has quite the wardrobe!
